Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) was a cross-platform runtime environment that allowed developers to create applications using web technologies (primarily HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with ActionScript) and deploy them as standalone applications on various operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Think of it as a bridge that allowed web apps to run outside of a web browser, with access to more system resources and functionalities.

Essentially, it packaged web-based content into a native application, giving it the look and feel of a desktop program while leveraging the familiar web development tools.

Key Features :

*

Cross-platform development:

Write once, deploy on multiple platforms.
*

Offline capabilities:

AIR applications could function even without an internet connection, depending on their design.
*

Access to native system features:

AIR applications could access functionalities like the file system, camera, microphone, and more.
*

Rich user interface:

Developers could create visually appealing and interactive user interfaces.

Why it[SQ]s no longer relevant (End-of-Life):

Adobe officially ended support for Adobe AIR in December 2020. This means no more updates, security patches, or support from Adobe. While some existing AIR apps might still function, using it for new development is strongly discouraged due to the security risks associated with unsupported software. Modern alternatives like Electron, React Native, Flutter, and other cross-platform development frameworks have largely superseded AIR[SQ]s capabilities.
